Blenders offer variable speeds that can be used for different blending jobs. Choose a blender with several or more speeds so it will be the most versatile. Bar blenders typically have two speeds while home kitchen blenders may have as many as 16 speeds. The higher the blender's wattage the more power it has. High-powered blenders have a minimum of 800 watts. Most typical home kitchen blenders have anywhere from about 350 watts up. If you want to crush ice you'll need a high speed.
When looking for a good blender don't consider the number of speeds it has as the most important feature. Most people only use a few of the speeds. More important is that the blender has a high quality blade. The blade should be made of hardened stainless steel to provide the best wear. A stainless blade won't rust when exposed to water.
The design of the blender jar or container is mostly a matter of preference. You can also choose between models that have glass jars or plastic jars. Glass is heavier and can break while plastic tends to get a bit cloudy over time. The shape of the jar should be slightly conical so that food slips easily down into the bottom where the blade is located. Choose a blender that is easy to clean – most jars can be washed in the dishwasher by simply removing the blade and gasket.
Look for easy control buttons that are easy to work. A pulse button is helpful when you just need a quick burst of power. Most blenders are operated by electricity however there are some portable blenders that are battery operated and can be charged. These are perfect when you want to take them to the boat or the beach, on a picnic or next to the pool. These are mostly made for blending drinks so don't expect a lot of power. Buying a blender is much a matter of preference. If you choose a well-made blender it can last for many years.
